Abstract

The liberalization of the land use market has become the most pressing economic issue for the Chinese Government in recent years. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of land market operations in China with an update of its land policies. It will first present some background information about the establishment of the land market and its transformation, and then document the land development process in China. The foregoing section discusses the problems associated with land acquisitions and how the Chinese Government has tried to overcome them, especially the loss of agricultural land due to its conversion from agricultural to non-agricultural uses, and the disputes between farmers and governments. The last section will offer a summary of this paper.
